City Of Misfits

“Over on sixth street they call me capt’n,” he tells me with a slow chuckle that pushes through crooked, yellow teeth.  Here I was shaking hands with a man whose namesake comes from people on a street that I identified in my early teens as “the coolest place ever,” though it will still be years before I can enjoy a glimpse of the night life that takes over those blocks. Captain was a panhandler. As one of his dark hands shook mine the other held a cup, in which you could hear the quiet jingle of dimes colliding with each other. He rolled down the street in his wheelchair and army green pants and despite the fact that you’re not supposed to talk to strangers, I couldn’t help myself.

Let’s go back for a moment. I’m Sarah from the Spring Branch area in the hill country of Texas above San Antonio. While this was no tiny town, I was still a big fish, in a small pond. President/editor/leader of several groups on campus, fourth in my class, accepted into an Ivy League university, my name and voice reverberated with authority through the halls of my high school. Thus the culture shock of coming to such a melting pot, only instead of melting I stuck to the wall watching everyone else dive in. Austin made me feel a discreet as the “animalecules” visible seen only under a microscope.
Fast forward back to today. I woke up before light, ate a cliff bar, tried to do some laundry (emphasis on the word tried) then headed out for school for what I knew would be a busy day. With four best friends in different cities, I was getting around to the idea of putting myself out there. You know, more than awkward glances, nods, and small talk. Don’t get me started on small talk. Anyways, I’m applying to be a staff member for the Daily Texan. A dream of a publication and tucked in a basement that I dream of belonging to.  Today was my tryout date, which entails going out, taking photos, doing an assignment, writing caption, etc.
As I listen to my Latin American biology teacher repeat, “Bacteria have no sexss.” Spraying around the “S” sound as you would water out of a hose. (The class laughed of course. Nothing draws the attention of college kids to mitosis and binary fission like the word sex spewed at you by a short balding man.) I imagined four years time going by. All the times I would pass the Tower. The friends I would hopefully get to make. The classes I would love and hate. The nights I’d stay up late studying. In my mind it all went so fast. I was already trying to catch the time through the gaps between my fingers.
After my second and last class of the day I discovered my bike was stuck, some brake malfunction. I couldn’t move the tires no matter how hard I tried. This was turning to be quite the off day (broken bike, broken washing machine, oh, and did I mention I dropped a glass bottle that shattered in The Daily Texan work center. Smooth. moves.) Despite all this should be negative stuff happening, I managed to push it all aside and focus on my tryouts. Something I’m usually not good at. I went to the Long Center, took photos, chatted up about an event, met this guy who left Seattle and politics to do nonprofit work, and met a 200-year-old violin from Germany. I mean maybe my day wasn’t going perfect, but for once I wasn’t having an anxiety attack. I was smiling like, the whole time, even though I was drenched in sweat, had walked miles in the heat, and well, everything else that happened.

I may not be the first to call it this but Austin truly is a city for everyone. It’s a land of mistfits, or maybe just a place with bunch of different people that try to change the world in different ways. Down South Congress I watched a gay pride banner wave in the sky in view of our prestigious capital building where Rick Perry slams hard firsts and soft politics about gay marriage and women’s rights. I watched a man named Mikey from San Diego play his guitar to raise funds to go back home, while I try and find unique images to turn in for my tryouts. I gave him a dollar, and he hoped that I found whatever I was looking for. I hoped so too. Here is a city for dreamers, and the crestfallen. Of Cowboy boots and shoeless movements. Anyone who belonged anywhere could belong here (that is if you can take the 100+ heat). “Don’t take a photo of me I’m a convict,” said a big man with the name “Don” spelled out on the uniform as he cut another gentleman’s hair. He laughed at my belief. Maybe my observations and wonderings, and shy photo-taking skills give away that I am indeed romantically gullible, but I don’t mind. I’m ready to experience and learn what this city has to teach me.

For my first week in Austin I lamented over my shyness, my major (which I changed), my insignificance, and the concern that I would never find my place in this city. Maybe it was people watching, talking to strangers, and photographing a homeless man that made me realize that I don’t really care about that anymore. I just want to do what makes me happy.
“Capt’n” and I chatted for a few minutes. He shook his cup in my direction and I dug in my pocket for my last dollar bill, never mind the fact that I am a college student and money is already tight. He continued his story. Captain had lost his home in 2005 to hurricane Katrina. After that he came here to live with one of his four daughters. “I stay at her house, but it ain’t mine so I consider myself homeless.” He explains to me. I nod my head and ask if he wants to see the photos I took before we started talking. “That’s pretty good,” he smiles to me long enough for me to count the gaps between his aging teeth. Four. He confides that he’s got enough now to go get himself a beer. I can’t find it in me to blame his honesty. As I turn away he calls after me. “Sarah! It’s Sarah right?” I nod. “Good luck with your school thing!”

After submitting my photos with slightly more confidence, I head towards the bus in order to make the 3-mile voyage back home. My bike would stay locked up for the night until I could retrieve it the next day. I tried to silence the sound of my sunburned skin, aching feet, and worry, turning to the thoughts of all I had seen and heard today.
Diagonal from me sat a mustached woman talking about Bill Clinton, regulation, and a questioning a man about his shoe choice. The bus was quiet except the shuffle of feet and her boisterous voice. “It’s that regulation, and the banks are going - well what I mean to say…” She stumbled through her words, and while at first glance you could think she was a fool, the joke was on you; she had everyone enamored with her talk. Finally, I got off the bus, walked to my apartment, and looked back on my day with the delight of someone who won the lottery. All these people, all these experiences just in reach of my finger-tips, if I’m willing to stretch far enough and have faith that I will unearth the wonderful.

So, this story will continue. The story of my city. The ramblings of the stories found by a college student. Stories with too many details it takes an hour to figure out which ones are worth telling. For me, in this land, everyone is someone with a tale worth telling. This is no New York, or L.A. Austin is a city all it’s own. In it is me, and Mikey, and the mustached woman, and my future friends, and the men at the barber shop, and Captain, and The Daily Texan staff, and countless amazing people. Austin truly is an anomaly tucked away into the Lone Star state.

Welcome back to my blog. Look forward to more. xoxo. sj.

Workshop Wednesday: Fall Art Journal

*workshop wednesdays are where I discuss my passion of written art via sharing poetry, my writing, art journals, or by discussing writing techniques and providing prompts for you to take on and enjoy on your own*
This is my most recently completed art journal. I loved doing a journal that pointed specifically at the fall season. Fall is filled with so much change, memories, and things that go undocumented, so it was nice recorded the feel of this season to remember for forever. This was the last fall of high school. The last fall of 7 classes a day. The last first day of school where you dress up, plan rides with girlfriends, and have advisory. I hope to remember all the good and bad feelings that came with this season.
This journal made by this amazing girl Kara Haupt was wonderful. All the prompts were really interesting and interactive, such as making a comic, and also thoughtful. It's hard to say goodbye to this fall, but having this journal makes it so much easier. Check out this journal and Kara's other journals here
Here is the last art journal I did over this past summer.
In other news talking about my last year of high school... I'm currently working on my senior Ad for the back of my yearbook. It's so crazy. I know that I'm not that old, but sometimes I get that feeling like "17, whoa, when did I get here?"
I'm very excited for this winter season. I have never been so hyped over christmas. I have tons of projects and recipes to share.
Thanks for reading. xoxo. sarah jasmine.

Color Story: Brown

I used to hate the color brown. I remember my dad patiently trying to get me to wear brown, explaining that it matched with everything, but stuck in my world of pink and purple I refused to believe such things could be true. Now look at me, brown (and all brownish colors) has become one of my very favorite colors. Brown is like that thing that sneaks up on you when you aren’t expecting it, and when it does you don’t know how you lived without it. That’s how I think of it. Brown is everything I aspire to be. It’s traveling to change the world. Settling down on a farm. Brown is countless adventures, filled with tons of getting a little dirt on your elbows and knees. Brown is fearless, and brown is comfortable. Brown sweaters and boots, and pants have consumed my fall, and will most likely also take over my winter. To all those brown haters out there who are like the old me, just look at all the beauty brown brings. It’s the natural state of things, and really it’s life itself. Ah… Brown, brown, brown…
happy magical monday. xoxo. sarah jasmine.

I use this color on my blog a bit because I do love it so. Light pink. The color of my childhood. I've always been a girly girl. The dress up in princess costumes, play with barbie type of girl. What can I say? I think some girls try to get away from pink for the very reason that I love it: the total feminine quality. Pink means....
feminity, imagination, beauty, innocence, rosy cheeks and dress up,
pink is spontanious laughter, pink is mothers teaching daughters,  and all the very delicate and lovely parts of a woman
I don't despair at the thought of being the gentler sex. I can be strong and funny and intelligent and sweet all at the same time. That's what pink means to me.

Color Story is where I crush on the beauty of different colors and what they mean to me. check out my other color stories here

I know these one's a gimme. Fall has begun and orange is the color of the season, but that does not take away how beautiful a color it is. Orange, most obviously change. But I don't really think of that when I see orange. Growing up in Texas we don't get many trees that change color and lose their leaves. But we do get beautiful sunrises and sunsets along the wide sky. That's what I think of when I think of orange. That little splash of magic that awes you for only a moment before it's gone. Orange is the color of doing. Green gets me going, but a sense of orange comes over me when I'm at in the middle of a craft, or carving a pumpkin, or prepping for the cold season to come. Lastly, orange is a brave color. Disliked by so many, but I think it's absolutely lovely, bright, and magical because it represents such a lovely time of year.
oh orange, what a great color.

Green. I love green. It means so many lovely things. It's growth and nature. I love nature and plants so the color always fill me with a sense of a serene natural state. Green means go. It means adventure and moving forward and growing from the past. It's such a hopeful color. Green means my father. It's his favorite color so when I think of green I think of his big, protective, yet gentle nature. Green is simplicity and complexity in the ways of nature. Green is the ever growing state of living and adventure. Green you are a beautiful color.

Inspiring Pages

Life without the internet has been....interesting. I'm so used to being able to pick up my laptop and google a recipe, or a famous person, or some random word. It's hard without it. I've also realized that I spend a lot of time gathering inspiration from Pinterest and all my favorite blogs, in other words my inspiration has been very limited to the same images that is inspiring the rest of the globe, and after a good hour or two of pinning and staring at the computer my brain feels like mush more often than it feels inspired. So, I decided to grab a few books that have been neglected over the years and flip through the pages. I was immediately inspired! Some of my old childrens books and this biography of Audrey Hepburn proved more rewarding than I thought. Here are some of the pages below:
The three children's books I picked out were filled with dreamy illustrations and words that still proved powerfully relevant to me even as a 17 years old. The Audrey Hepburn book featured gorgeous images of the icon, her life, and her attire. From these books I have so many ideas floating around for paintings, a journal, and outfits. It was such a shift from gathering inspiration on the computer. When my internet comes back I will be sure to make sure I back off from the computer some days and go to a bookstore or flip through old magazines for inspiration instead. Or even just take a walk. I'm remembering that inspiration comes from everywhere not just the internet. It's wonderful and it doesn't leave my brain with that mushy feeling.
Try it out! Grab some old illustrated books from your shelf and search. I'm sure you will be as surprised as I was about all the beauty that lies inside some forgotten pages.
xoxo. Sarah Jasmine.

Garden Inspiration

My spring garden is underway!  I have peas, carrots, basil, tomatoes, mint, and shy spinach.  I usually just grow a few things like some basil and tomatoes since they grow really well here, but I wanted to try out a variety of things. Sadly, everything I grow however must be contained in pots and troughs (because we rent I'm not allowed to set roots in the ground). Still, I love gardening. I'm not particularly great at it, but I enjoy getting my hands dirty and making the soil burst with life. The excitement I get when my seedlings sprout is born from watching my grandmother, who stopped on the side of the road to pick seeds and would marvel in nurseries at how many different types of vines there were. Everything that I know about gardening I learned from her. Everything else is pure instinct. I really don't even read the growing instructions on the back. I lay down some leaves, water when I feel is necessary, and cover them up when its cold. I of course also talk to them and give them names. There is just something that makes me feel like I'm unlocking some part of my humanity when I grow my own food. It's nothing substantial, but still. I can't wait till I grow older and can have my own garden with some chickens, maybe a goat to make some homemade cheese... oh, these lovely garden photos inspire me:
